Bridge Project

The Milford Street Bridge Project aims to involve the whole community in celebrating the history of the people and buildings in the area around the Milford Street Bridge in Salisbury.

Salisbury Arts Centre is one of eight partners working on the project, alongside St Edmunds Community Association, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum, Highways Agency, Salisbury Civic Society, Spoken Histories, Wiltshire Dancing and Wessex Archaeology.

The Project is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Salisbury City Council and Wiltshire Council.

It has been an exciting journey so far:

  • During February and March 2010 volunteers were recruited for the oral history interviewing team and research was conducted into the history of the area.
  • From March to July 2010 volunteers gathered stories from local people
  • From March to October 2010 the team were busy archiving and transcribing the oral history interviews
  • From October 2010 to February 2011 they worked on creating an oral history CD and booklet
  • From October 2010 to January 2011 artists worked on a mural design that would capture the history and stories of the area
  • Between February 2011 and April 2011 the mural came to life under the Milford Street Bridge
  • Finally, in April 2011 a Family Learning week kicked off full of events focusing on our heritage, including an exhibition, family fun day, family oral history, heritage walks, debate and a celebratory procession!
