Show and Tell #11 - Skerryvore
Skerryvore create a unique fusion of folk, trad, rock and Americana that represents all the different personalities and upbringing of the 8 band members who hail from different regions of Scotland. Four of them - Daniel, Jodie, Scott and Martin agreed to respond to our Show and Tell questionnaire :-) The group took their name from the Skerryvore lighthouse that lies 12 miles (19 kilometres) off the coast of Tiree. They will perform at the Arts Centre on Thursday 23 November.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Daniel: Being home on a sunny day in Tiree spending time with family & friends as we enjoy a BBQ, the white sand beaches and a few refreshments. (Added bonus would be nobody having mobiles, emails or work pressure for the day!)
Jodie: Relaxing with good music, good people, good food and a nice rum!
Scott: For me, perfect happiness is being on stage with friends playing music to a smiling, happy audience, whether there’s 10,000 people in the crowd or 10!
Martin: Sunshine, beach & Beer!
What lies at the heart of your own desire to do your creative work?
Daniel: The challenge to keep progressing and taking our music to new people and new places worldwide
Scott: The passion for progressing the tradition of Scotland’s music keeps me creative. I really want to see the scene we’re involved in reach millions of people across the world so they can see how exciting the music really is!
What are the first things you do in developing an idea in response to a subject?
Daniel: Learn more about the subject, especially if a person or story
Jodie: No set formula aside from trying to capture the particular mood, whether that's a chord progression, instrument part or lyric.
What’s your favourite film and why?
Daniel: Very hard to pick one! Pulp Fiction perhaps just edges it as it has everything I love in a movie - action, humour, twisted storyline, great actors plus an amazing soundtrack
Jodie: Tough to choose one, but probably Big Trouble In Little China!
Scott: Favourite film is Interstellar, I love anything that pulls your mind apart and anything that involves space!
Martin: Any Given Sunday. Al Pacino is one of my favourite actors and being a big sports fan this has to be a favourite!
Choose 1, 2 or 3 of your all-time favourite music tracks.
Blair Douglas - Lewis Love
Stealers Wheel - Stuck in the Middle
Jason Mraz - I won't Give Up
Jodie: Too difficult to choose just 3. "Everybody Love The Sunshine" by Roy Ayers is a constant though.
Queen of California - John Mayer
Little Lies - I’m With Her
Death and All His Friends - Coldplay
Martin: Hearts of Olden Glory (Runrig), Money for Nothing (Dire Straits), Everglow (Coldplay)
If you were to die and come back as a person, animal or a thing, what would it be?
Scott: Would like to be a bird so I don’t have to get on aeroplanes to tour.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Daniel: Dining at nice restaurants. It used to be designer sunglasses but I kept losing them!
Jodie: I have a big appetite, so probably food!
Scott: I sometimes have a bottle of appletiser after a show!
What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Scott: Scotland’s landscape gets me on all three levels and is behind a lot of my inspiration. Whether it’s in a Loch or on top of a mountain, the country never seems to let me down!
Which artwork/film/book has most inspired you?
Daniel: The Secret
Jodie: Music Is My Sanctuary, great place to discover new music.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Daniel: Be grateful every day for everything you have. Life is too short to worry about the past or the future.
Jodie: "Be excellent to each other." - Bill S. Preston Esq.
Scott: Follow your heart!
Martin: If you can't do the time, don't do the crime!
Piece of equipment you can’t live without?
Daniel: Sadly, would have to say my iPhone or laptop.
Scott: My bagpipe stand!
Best recent read
Jodie: Probably an article on BulletproofMusician.com
What is your final word?
Scott: Cannot wait to come down to the Salisbury Arts Centre on the 23rd November!
Martin: Jet Lag sucks!
