Special Projects

An important part of the work undertaken by the arts centre are the Special Projects.  These are targeted projects we work on throughout the year which aim to reach audiences and participants who for various reasons may not otherwise be involved in arts activities.

The Princes Foundation for Children and the Arts: Folk Tales and Legends Programme

The prince's Foundation for Children and the Arts Sarum Orchestra

Salisbury Arts Centre are delighted to be working together with Sarum Orchestra on a special Folk Tales and Legends Programmes for local schools, funded by the Prince's Foundation for Children and the Arts.

During the project over 325 year 3- 6 pupils from local Primary Schools will participate in a number of activities including workshops with professional performers and attending a specially designed Sarum Orchestra concert, based on the story of Baba Yaga, and a visual show ‘Rags to Withes by Josh Elwell and Company, based on the folklore of the New Forest.  Teachers from the participating schools will also attend an inset session led by Sarum Orchestra, and will receive classroom packs based around the central themes.

The pupils and their families will also be invited to visual arts exhibitions and other family events throughout the year and beyond at Salisbury Arts Centre to sustain the cultural link.

Schools involved in the Folk Tales and Legends project are: Amesbury Archer, Durrington CE Junior School, Exeter House, Highbury Primary School, Netheravon All Saints Primary, Sarum St Paul’s Primary, Woodford Valley School and Whiteparish All Saints School

5 x 5 x 5 = Creativity

5x5x5 is a regional project exploring, encouraging and documenting creativity in young children. For the past two years, Salisbury Arts Centre has been a cultural partner with Pitton Pre-School and visual artist James Aldridge, giving children the chance to experience and explore the different facets of the Arts Centre and its environment, as well as providing a venue to exhibit their work and documentation of the process.

Music Xpress

Music Xpress is a music technology project, run across Wiltshire.   It offers young people aged 13 – 21, who do not regularly participate in arts and music activities, the opportunity to create their own music.  Through tuition from experienced and inspiring tutors, young people have been able to write, mix and record their own tracks.

The project developed from a highly successful pilot in 2005, during which young people developed skills in DJ-ing and music technology, creating new tracks and lyrics that were burnt onto CD.  Focusing primarily on intensive holiday courses and outreach session, Music Xpress now aims to establish a regular music technology programme across Wiltshire.

As part of the project a showcase and celebration of the work created in 2007 will be at Salisbury Arts Centre on Friday 26 October.

MusicXpress is run by the Wiltshire Youth Arts Partnership and the Wiltshire Music Centre, in partnership with Wiltshire Youth Development Service, Salisbury College and St Laurence School.  Funding has been provided by Youth Music, the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, the Vodafone UK Foundation and the Home Office's 'Safer, Stronger, Communities' Fund through Wiltshire County Council's Community Safety Partnership.
