History is put on trial in the riveting true story of Deborah Lipstadt’s legal battle with historian David Irving, who accused her of libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier. Rachel Weisz is on top form as the tenacious Lipstadt, who finds herself in a position where she has to defend herself and prove beyond all doubt that the Holocaust happened, while Timothy Spall is the personification of evil as the scowling, gaunt faced Irving. Adapted by David Hare from Lipstadt’s book about the case, this engrossing courtroom drama digests and presents complex issues with nuance as it builds up to a satisfying conclusion.
