About

Take a seat at the strangest dinner party of your life. The servants have absconded; the ragout is all over the floor; there’s a bear in the garden; your fellow guests are rapidly descending into savagery; and most mysteriously of all, no one seems able to leave.

British composer Thomas Adès (The Tempest) conducts the American premiere of his latest opera. Co-commissioned by the Met and sung in English, this black comedy, with shades of JG Ballard/Ben Wheatley’s High-Rise, is based on the screenplay of Luis Buñuel’s 1962 surrealist film. The cast is filled with established British names including Sally Matthews, Sophie Bevan, Alice Coote, Christine Rice, Ieystn Davies and John Tomlinson.

“A SPECTACULAR American premiere of one of the most anticipated openings of a new opera in years … A MAJOR CULTURAL EVENT.” —Huffington Post

“HYPERDRAMATIC … ADÈS MUST HAVE BEEN MOVING TOWARD THIS WORK HIS ENTIRE LIFE … I can’t think of another living composer who can conjure fear, contentment, bitterness, disgust, and joy with a few quick measures.” —New York Magazine

“STUNNINGLY INVENTIVE … Audacious … Mr. Adès’s wild, searing score explores the emotional undercurrents of the story and fleshes out the horror of the characters’ situation … Played with CRACKLING PRECISION and color by the orchestra … bristled with manic, almost MADCAP, ENERGY.” —New York Times

“MUSICALLY DAZZLING … Adès’s opera has staked its claim. ****” —Financial Times

“If you see one opera this year, make it The Exterminating Angel …” —New York Times

“Adès’s KALEIDOSCOPIC MUSIC transforms into a scarily contemporary comedy, a kind of modern Falstaff in which the cosmic joke is on everyone … A sly mix of humor and bludgeoning force … A VIRTUOSO CAST.” —Wall Street Journal
