Words of Art: Lifelines
Laurence Rushby

Words of Art

Laurence Rushby’s striking new commission, made especially for Salisbury Arts Centre, creates a lifeline linking a multitude of personal stories to the architecture of the building. Fragments of poems written by community group participants from The Kingfisher Project float in the air, celebrating the importance of art for health and wellbeing.

The Kingfisher Project us a collaborative project between Salisbury Arts Centre and Art Care.  It provides a platform for sharing and celebrating literature in health and social care settings.

Curated by the actress Harriet Walter to celebrate the beauty of the ageing female face, portraits in this photographic exhibition range from the famous: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Mary Quant and Annie Lennox, to the not so famous: friends, friends of friends and people spotted in the street such as Jocelyn Ross.

Vivien Blackett:
Painting and Drawings

Vivien Blackett presents this exhibition having been selected by the Arts Centre's Open 09 Drawing Panel. Her skilfully executed paintings combine images from a variety of sources ranging from Renaissance painting to medieval prints and numerous books, both contemporary and historical. The drawings that she uses to experiment with connections, scale, illusion and meaning, are an important and playful part of her research for the paintings.

Vivien will be holding a tour of her exhibition on Tuesday 13 July.

We will also be hosting a Panel discussion around the medium of drawing following the Open 09 National exhibition. Please click here for details.

August

The House of Fairy Tales

Salisbury Arts Centre's exhibition and workshop activities during August will be presented with The House of Fairy Tales.
The House of Fairy Tales was set up in 2007 by the artist Gavin Turk and the writer Deborah Curtis to produce large and small scale events celebrating and promoting creative
education. Working with an expanding network of visual artists, theatre performers and musicians, as well as creative mathematicians, inventors, engineers and scientists their aim is to equip the next generation with the imagination needed for their future on the planet.

Past projects have seen an installation at The New Art Gallery in Walsall featuring artefacts, drawings, notes, photographs, films and curios inspired by Cabinets of Curiosities and a residency outside Tate Modern including activities such as sewing, exploring silhouettes and shadow puppets, visiting a witch's gingerbread house and
learning to dance around a maypole. Their residency will offer activities for all ages in a playful celebration of homemade culture.
